Mistaken Identity

You probably know,
you’ve probably heard
fables and stories of a boy raised by wolves?
Following the pack
he would crawl around on all fours
arms used as forelegs
no words in his mouth,
just noises and a howl at the moon.

But, did you know,
have you heard
of the eagle raised by humming birds?
Oh what a curious thing!
to follow a flock whose wings beat 80 times a second.
The eagle madly flaps about
stressed and panicked
flitting this way and that
anxiously from one thing to the next
using all it’s energy.
Growing tired and growing weary.

Or did you know,
have you heard of the eagle raised by pigeons?
Now that’s a sight to see in your local park!
That sharp hooked beak pecking at the ground
a scavenger in scarcity,
all it sees is lack
all it sees is need
it shuffles hopelessly around in the dirt
it's head hung low
going though bins, picking at scraps.
A poorly nourished soul.
Growing tired and growing weary.

And sadder still, did you know,
have you heard of the eagle raised by swallows?
Having seen all these other birds leaving in droves,
both young and old moving on
it becomes convinced it must migrate too.
and head for warmer climates.
Because what bird could possibly withstand these winter pressures?
How can it survive these harsh conditions?

Ooh, did they not know,
had they not heard?
Eagles need only wait.
this is what they’re made for
no need to flap or peck.
no need to leave.

We must wait friends
stay poised
hold fast our position
stay attentive to the wind
waiting on our wind
who blows close,
blows like a gentle breeze
and blows like a hurricane.

Let’s wait for Him.  Wait.
and then ‘let go’
let Him carry us up
that we might soar high, yes
high above the clouds even,
what a different perspective we get from up here!
but that we would soar long too.
With Him we can endure
we can go high and we can go great distances.

'Did you not know?
Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary
and young men stumble and fall;

but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.'
(Isaiah 40 v. 28-31)
